Just in time for the spirit of the holidays, Marriott International has revealed an ambitious agenda to give back. The Serve 360 is a blueprint that covers issues from human rights to social impact initiatives. Ray Bennett, chief global officer, global operations at Marriott International and Serve 360 executive leadership council co-chair says, “We recognize that how we do business is as important as the business that we do.” The plan is based on four areas or coordinates, guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

1

Nurture:

Contribute 15 million associate volunteer hours, of which 25 per cent will be skills-based to capitalize on personal talents and core business skills.

2

Sustain:

Reducing the company’s environmental impact, sourcing responsibly and building and operating sustainable hotels. Reduce water consumption by 15 percent, carbon by 30 per cent, waste by 45 per cent and food waste by 50 per cent by 2025.

3

Empower:

Help people prepare for jobs in the hospitality industry. Train 100 per cent of employees to recognize the signs of human trafficking.

4

Advance Human Rights:

Embed human rights criteria in recruitment and training.

GOOD TO KNOW

MEETINGS + EVENTS

Event Design Certificate
Event planners can obtain their event design certificate with an immersive three-day training course at San Diego University in the New Year. Pre-course coaching prior to class and then designing a case study and completing an event will qualify planners to use the Certified Event Designer CED acronym as a designation. All successful participants will also be granted 24 continuing education clock hours as defined by the Events Industry Council.

CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT

Smart Bags Ban
Business travellers who have "smart bags" will no longer be able to fly Delta Airlines with the luggage, unless they can remove the lithium-ion batteries due to possible fire hazard concerns during flight. The so-called “smart bags” have grown in popularity as they allow travellers to track their bags with Bluetooth locators, charge devices and weigh the bag to prevent over packing.

INCENTIVES + REWARDS

A Helping Hand
A pilot program set to rollout in January 2018 will help new employees pay down their student debt, while contributing to a voluntary retirement program. Great-West Life, based in Winnipeg, is partnering with select employers with this novel program. As participating members pay down their Canadian student loans, they receive an employer-matched contribution to their group retirement and savings plan. The plan will evolve based on client feedback and results.
