In the recent IACC Meeting Room of the Future 2017 report, client experience is noted as one of the building blocks for successful events. With millennials and later generations entering the workforce in greater numbers, the way conferences are designed is undergoing a subtle shift. The way this demographic learns, interacts and chooses to work will require conference organizers to change the meeting space to create opportunities for deeper learning. A recent web post by Velvet Chainsaw Consulting notes that just changing the room design won’t foster learning. The firm suggests that planners think about the learning experience to create change.
1 |
Guests or Collaborators:
Conference delegates need to own and participate in their learning, not just passively consume it. They need to collaborate with others to co-create a learning experience. |
|
2 |
You’ve Got to Move it:
Conference planners need to get their participants moving, not sitting quietly for panel discussions or lectures. Try changing about 20 per cent of your sessions to start. Motion helps recall and understanding of a subject. |
|
3 |
Transformative Learning:
There is a need to create conference opportunities that change attitudes, behaviours and skills. |
|
4 |
Allow Space for Creativity:
Think about surfaces that support more collaboration such as idea walls, whiteboards, moveable desks, bar-height tables and a variety of seats and layouts. |
|
5 |
Show it Off:
Use walls to display the learning process, show the progression of an idea and share it. The walls become interactive and interpretive. Plan who is responsible for showcasing an idea and how it will be displayed (think magnets, digital portfolios or hanging ideas from the ceiling). |
|
6 |
Reflect:
Just as important, create a quiet space for peaceful thought and reflection. |

MEETINGS + EVENTS
Bisha Hotel
Just in time for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Bisha Hotel Toronto is right where the action plays out during the first week of September. The hotel features a stunner of a rooftop terrace—think 180° views from East to West, catching both sunrise and sunset and the gorgeous Lake Ontario horizons. An infinity pool and adjacent KOST restaurant and bar featuring the flavours of Baja-Mexican cuisine adds to the atmosphere. The first few floors are all booked for TIFF, but the entire hotel is expected to be ready for October. The 43rd floor Salvador meeting room covers the entire east wall of the hotel, with the same great views as the terrace. The rooms seats 130, and is divisible by three.
CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
Staying Connected
Business travellers are more connected than ever before, with many carrying an average of four devices with them on the road. According to the CWT Connected Traveler Study, more than 80 per cent of the 1,900 respondents say their smartphone is the one travel tool they can’t live without. The majority of Canadian business travel is to attend conferences or industry events (57 per cent), to do presentations or face-to-face meetings (48 per cent) and to meet or work with clients (47 per cent).
