The “City That Never Sleeps” lives up to the hype
with
new venues, attractions and sights. New York City is investing infrastructure dollars in mid-town
and the boroughs with a number of new projects,
sure to delight convention and incentive guests for years to come.
1 |
Expanding:
The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center has just broken ground on a one million-sq.-ft. expansion, which includes a half million-sq.-ft. exhibition hall, a rooftop terrace and 60,000-sq.-ft. ballroom. |
|
2 |
Hudson Yards:
This new development on the northeastern side of Staten Island will be a go-to destination by the time it’s finished in 2019. Gleaming new glass skyscrapers will house offices and private residences, an observation deck and a permanent art centerpiece called the Vessel—already dubbed “New York’s Eiffel Tower.” |
|
3 |
New York Wheel:
This new attraction will be the tallest observation wheel in the world, and the only one in New York City. Each of the 36 capsules on the wheel is as big as a subway car, and it will take 38 minutes to completely go around the ride. Coming in mid-2018. |
|
4 |
Times Square:
The NFL Experience will open this November, bringing professional football to life with exclusive 4D film footage, interactive displays and championship memorabilia. |
|
5 |
LinkNYC:
As of this year, over 600 LinkNYC kiosks have been installed in all five boroughs offering free high-speed Internet, phone calls and device charging for all residents and visitors. The city hopes to have 7,500 kiosks installed by 2024. |
|
6 |
Getting there:
LaGuardia Airport is undergoing a comprehensive redesign to transform the terminal, taxiway space and passenger amenities. John F. Kennedy International Airport will receive a $10 billion investment to connect the newer terminals, install state-of-the-art security technology and expand taxiways. |

MEETINGS + EVENTS
New Global Alliance
IACC and Meeting Professionals International (MPI) have announced a five-year global partnership for the mutual benefit of their members. These two organizations will share events and learning platforms at annual conferences and regional events, as well as online. This year, MPI conferences will be streamed live to IACC venues, where MPI members can congregate to learn and network. MPI will also take part in the next phase of the IACC Meeting Room of the Future research project, which will be presented at WEC 2017 in June.
CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
Checking In
A new global survey by the Association of Corporate Travel Executives and American Express Global Business Travel says 56 per cent of business travellers are concerned about personal safety while on the road and have become more vocal about the need for improved safety training. Concerns cross over to digital content, with 31 per cent of buyers reporting increased enquiries about business data security. Work-life balance is important for 31 per cent of travellers, with 43 per cent of employees asking to add leisure time to their corporate bookings.
INCENTIVES + REWARDS
Baha Mar
The long-awaited Baha Mar Resort in Nassau is finally open. The 1,000-acre resort will eventually feature three hotels, including the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar, SLS Baha Mar and Rosewood Baha Mar, but the Grand Hyatt is the only hotel of the three accepting reservations right now. The resort features a Jack Nicklaus designed 18-hole golf course, a casino, a 200,000-sq.-ft. performing arts and convention centre and over 40 restaurants onsite.
