The start of the New Year plays on our desire to do things differently or better. We all want to take steps to improve our health, outlook or daily habits. We’ve compiled some hints to make 2017 the Best Year Ever!
1 |
Gotta Love the French:
New labour legislation in France in force on January 1 requires companies with more than 50 employees to negotiate a protocol that puts limits on the need to reply to email on evenings and weekends. The so-called “Right to Disconnect” can set times when employees are not expected to reply to company email. |
|
2 |
Get moving:
A recent study by Johnson & Johnson and the Colorado Nutrition Obesity Research Center says exercise for as little as five minutes a day every hour can lift your workday mood and even reduce hunger pangs. People who sit at a computer all day
(that would be most of us) are at risk for diabetes, depression and obesity compared to others who move frequently. Multiple brief breaks—a five-minute walk every hour— elevated moods better than one long walk at the beginning or end of the day. |
|
3 |
Mindfulness:
The Mindful website focuses on the ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and not be overwhelmed by what’s going on around us—diametrically opposed to the multi-tasking mindset we sometimes fall into. Try the three-minute body scan to cultivate mindfulness or the five-minute breathing meditation for beginners. |

MEETINGS + EVENTS
Secure Charging
Canada’s FMAV has been named authorized partner for Brightbox nationwide. Brightbox is a kiosk technology company providing venues with mobile device recharging stations. The secure locker-style recharging stations have digital signage and interactive kiosk features that increase brand exposure for sponsors. Brightbox can provide data reporting to enable event organizers and sponsors to track brand impressions, usage and post-event ROI.
CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
Changing Behaviours
Travel policy compliance is a perennial problem for corporate travel managers. Carlson Wagonlit Travel Solutions Group has created a traveller engagement system to increase traveller responsibility to stay within the corporate program and says savings of up to 15 per cent are possible. The white paper says compliance education needs to be delivered as an ongoing process. Gamification or travel scorecards provide positive reinforcement for staying within the company travel policy.
INCENTIVES + REWARDS
High Tech at Sea
Carnival Cruise Lines is launching the One Cruise Experience Access Network (Ocean) medallion, a wearable device that acts as a digital personal concierge for guests. The complimentary device will allow passengers to access their rooms, help passengers navigate the decks onboard, make purchases and locate friends on the ship. Once a passenger sets a profile, the crew is briefed on all preferences and the Ocean concierge will send suggestions and invitations to events onboard or ashore. Guests not comfortable with the technology can opt out, and use the medallion for safety only. The Ocean Medallion cruises will debut on the Princess line in November 2017.
