The sixth annual American Express Global Meetings & Events Forecast report has just been released. It contains a wealth of data covering global meetings and events spend, from accommodation to air and everything in between. The report covers trends in North America, Europe, Asia/Pacific and Central/South America. It also contains information on supplier mergers and acquisitions, duty of care and a look at the changing workforce demographic. Here are just some of the highlights from the 84-page report.
1 |
Holding Steady:
The North American meetings and events market should remain constant for the most part in 2017, with the number of meetings, meeting length and overall budget remaining consistent with 2016 numbers. Off-site evening activities, optional activities and the use of a destination management company are the cost areas cut first if budgets need to be maintained. |
|
2 |
Mid-tier:
While large cities still dominate for meeting and event locations, this year will see second-tier cities increase their event activity by seven per cent from last year as a more affordable alternative. As airlines create new routes to mid-tier cities, interest will grow. Meeting planners will be challenged by a limited hotel supply with mid-scale and luxury hotel openings expected to decline. Planners will be sourcing beyond the traditional property choices in large cities to smaller properties outside metropolitan areas. |
|
3 |
Merger Activity:
Blockbuster mergers in the hotel industry will impact change, but it certainly won’t happen quickly. M & A activity will increase opportunities to invest in technology and infrastructure, and access to capital for smaller chains to
enhance their properties. It will be important for planners to know the historical data about their programs to strengthen their negotiating position. |

MEETINGS + EVENTS
Meetings Mean Business
The US-based Meetings Mean Business (MBB) coalition has appointed Paul Van Deventer, president and CEO of Meeting Professionals International as co-chair effective January 2017. He will work with fellow co-chair Richard Harper, executive vice president of HelmsBriscoe. MBB works to highlight the value of in-person meetings, trade shows, conferences, conventions and incentive travel. Van Deventer is the first co-chair who leads a professional meeting organization. The pair will host the second annual Global Meetings Industry Day in 2017, in addition to working with the newly formed Meeting Planners Task Force to engage this segment of the industry as valuable advocates.
CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
GBTA Certification
The Global Business Travel Association is doing a job analysis survey for the Global Travel Professional (GTP) Certification that it administers and needs corporate travel managers to help out. The GBTA would like travel management professionals to complete a survey about job tasks and core knowledge areas to help finalize updated test contents for the certification exam. The survey should take about 20 minutes to complete. You will be prompted to create an account to complete the survey. The deadline for replies is November 4, 2016.
INCENTIVES + REWARDS
Incentive Travel Research
The just-released SITE Survey 2017 paints a reassuring picture of incentive travel with a net increase in program budgets. But even though budgets are slowly increasing, programs are usually shorter (39%), have fewer inclusions (29%), or travel to less expensive destinations. Respondents indicate that corporate social responsibility is now becoming the norm, with seven out of 10 programs including at least one CSR activity, which is popular with all demographic age groups, not just the millennials. The survey notes a recurring problem with a lack of metrics on the ROI of incentive travel. In many cases, there is no formal requirement to assess a program’s effectiveness, which could have repercussions during an economic downturn.
