Our national holiday is a time to reflect and consider our good fortune to live in such a great country. Here's our round-up of some great adventures and fabulous venues—right in our own backyard.

1

Canada's Day

Next year will be a BIG celebration for our sesquicentennial birthday. The city of Ottawa has a number of legacy projects currently underway that will be ready in time for July 1, 2017. Event planners are looking forward to the renovations at the National Arts Centre, new exhibits at the Museum of Nature and the Canadian Museum of History and a complete renewal of the Museum of Science and Technology.

2

Winnipeg Legislature

On a recent trip to Winnipeg, Ignite was treated to the Hermetic Code Tour at the grand Winnipeg Legislature building. This is the one tour you have to take when you're in the city. Try to take the tour with Heartland International Travel and Tours with Don Finkbeiner as your guide. It is a fascinating glimpse into the architecture, symbolism and mysticism of the site—and will leave you spellbound with wonder. Canadian antiquities professor Dr. Frank Albo spent 10 years in research to unlock the secrets of this building.

3

Banff Gondola

An August 2016 reveal is planned for the exciting redevelopment of the upper terminal for this signature attraction in Banff. The new state-of-the-art facilities will feature interactive exhibits, observation viewing decks and new conference space for events. Imagine the wow factor with unparalleled 360 degree views of six Canadian mountain ranges—guaranteed to take your breath away. Curated theatre presentations will showcase the beauty of Canada's first National Park.

4

Chateau Boreal

Quebec's iconic hotel is going boreal—by planting trees. Guests staying two or more nights at Fairmont Le Château Frontenac can forego room-cleaning services and the chateau will plant one tree per night in their name in the Montmorency forest, just north of the city. The forest is the largest teaching and research forest in the world and is open to the public.

EDITOR'S CHOICE

Sweet Soap

Handmade in Montreal, this soap smells of mint and lavender. Essential oils of wild harvest pine resin acts as an antiseptic and crushed eggshells cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize. This bar is great for keeping in the kitchen—to fight garlic odours or to soften hands after gardening.

Canadian Gold
Congratulations to Lydia Blanchard of the MPI Ottawa Chapter for her MPI RISE Award, presented at the MPI 2016 World Educational Conference in Atlantic City. As a past volunteer for the MPI Ottawa chapter's Community Outreach Committee, Blanchard helped raise more than $90,000 towards the Ottawa Network for the Education School Breakfast Program as part of the annual charity auction dinner. She was instrumental in developing a sport tourism events partnership among key stakeholders in the region so that the city could bid on large tournaments and events. Blanchard is a business development sales manager for NAV Centre and currently serves as the director of publications for the chapter.

CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT

Mega-Merger Game Changer
A new study by CWT Solutions Group says travel managers should start preparing for 2018 hotel negotiations now. The Marriott/Starwood merger represents 30 per cent or more of corporate room nights in 14 of the 20 top business cities around the globe. The merger will also reduce the number of hotels in the RFP process, which should streamline negotiations. The study suggests that managers assess alternative hotel chains, prepare to have a flexible approach for 2017 negotiations and communicate to your company travellers the importance of mandated travel policies. Read the full report here.
