In honour of Earth Day later this month—we've gathered the latest intel on sustainable meetings and sustainability hacks helpful to know.

1

A Green Merger

The Green Meetings Industry Council (GMIC) has merged with the Conventions Industry Council (CIC) with a specific charter to educate and advocate for sustainability in the industry under the direction of its board. This move will allow the GMIC to reach a wider audience and have a deeper impact within the meetings and incentive industries.

2

Meeting Cred

Planners looking to upgrade their green meeting credentials can take advantage of courses offered conveniently online. GreenShoot Pacific offers a course in ISO 20121—a management system standard for the treatment of sustainability issues for an organization and its events—in a modular format that takes about two hours a week for eight weeks. The Global Business Travel Association offers Project Icarus—a sustainability best practice program with five live-streamed modules.

3

Green Ninjas

Get a little help with your event agenda with the help of the Green Meeting Ninjas. This crew works alongside planners and suppliers by looking at events through a sustainability lens. For planners they can help with a sustainable event assessment, waste management planning, standards compliance and sustainability reporting.

4

Home Grown

The International Centre’s Executive Chef Tawfik Shehata is justifiably proud of his 2,000-sq.-ft. rooftop garden and has plans to expand the footprint to plant more herbs, garnishes and vegetables. As an ongoing part of the Centre’s sustainability efforts, Chef Shehata promotes choosing seasonal vegetables in order to keep costs down and showcase the beauty and abundance of Ontario locally grown produce. He says "We try to introduce new produce options, like candy cane beets or fennel—rather than just the generic broccoli, carrots and peppers."

5

Healthy Oceans

Royal Caribbean Cruises and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) announced a five-year partnership to support ocean conservation. This partnership will set measurable and achievable sustainability targets to reduce the environmental footprint of the cruise line, raise awareness about ocean conservation and support WWF’s global oceans conservation work.

Appeeling Story

These journals, available in three different sizes have an “appeeling and sustainable story.” The inside pages are made from a raw base of apple skins and cores, while the Eco-peel covers are made from 70 per cent recycled leather and 30 per cent apple peels. Write that down— along with your great business ideas.

GOOD TO KNOW

MEETINGS + EVENTS

Make Your Voice Heard
The survey link is now operational for the Canadian Economic Impact Study 4.0. The Business Events Industry Coalition of Canada (BEICC) needs meeting and event planners to input information to refresh the data on Canadian business events activity for this latest update to the economic impact of meetings and events in Canada. The study is being conducted by Ryerson University, Ted Rogers School of Hospitality & Tourism Management, under the guidance of Professor Richard Wade on behalf of the BEICC.

CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT

Eight Days Out
Travel management myths and some surprising insights highlight an analysis done by Concur, a U.S.-based travel management firm, about last-minute travel. Looking at stats between 2011 and 2015, the firm found that there is about a $200 differential between a flight booked 15 days in advance and one booked last minute. The optimum window of opportunity for booking last minute flights is actually eight days out for a difference of $100. Flying through smaller to mid-sized airports could save you more money when travel is last minute, although you’d have to determine if airfare savings offset the cost of car rentals.

INCENTIVES + REWARDS

Fiduciary Rule in the US
SITE and the Financial & Insurance Conference Planners (FICP) have issued a joint press release about the impact a new fiduciary rule from the US Department of Labor could have on incentive programs in that country. The rule would require that advisors would have to disclose whether or not a recommendation from them is impacted by a possible commission or bonus structure (i.e., incentive travel program). FICP and SITE argue that some companies may decide to withdraw from incentive travel programs altogether.
