The Ignite Guide to Masks

Mask Guide

by Laura Bickle

Masks are part of the new arsenal of items that can keep attendees safe. Here’s what you need to know to make sure they are used properly.

Sign of the Times

The International Association for Exhibitions and Events (IAEE) recommends that events post signage throughout the venue outlining its mask policy.

Details include who is expected to wear masks and under what conditions, where masks can be acquired if needed and proper mask usage, as well as social distancing and sanitization protocols.

MASKING: The Truth

The World Health Organization offers these best practices for mask-wearing:

  • Before putting on a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • Cover mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.
  • Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap
  • and water.
  • Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.
  • To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of mask); discard immediately in a closed bin; clean hands with alcohol- based hand rub or soap and water.
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand- cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
