MEETINGS + EVENTS
Going for Gold
Montreal's Palais des Congrès has just earned the highest level of certification for convention centres, the AIPC Gold Quality Standard—based on the centre's quality and management performance. The award is judged by an independent audit process and measures 10 specific areas: including customer service, operations, employee relations, environmental responsibility and supplier relations to name a few. The Palais is one of only 26 convention centres worldwide to achieve this certification. In the last two years, the centre has hosted over 127,000 convention goers and room nights in Montreal are up by 39 per cent compared to the average for the last five years.

CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
Uber Gains
A first quarter report from travel and expense software provider Certify, tracking millions of expense receipts, says that ridesharing services like Uber are rapidly changing the market for taxis and limousines used for business travel. In Q1 of 2015, an average of 46 per cent of total paid car rides were through Uber, compared to 15 per cent in Q1 of 2014. The shift in use by business travellers is also keeping accountants happy, as the Uber rate is generally a little cheaper. Contrary to the image of high-powered business lunches, the most-expensed restaurants are Starbucks and McDonald's. The most expensed airline was Delta, and the most expensed hotel was Marriott.

INCENTIVES + REWARDS
Gift Card Trends
The Incentive Research Foundation reveals the top 10 trends in incentive merchandise and gift cards for the coming year. For starters, over half of planners say budgets are trending up and per-person spend on gifts or cards is also increasing. While one quarter of planners spend between $50 to $100 per person, at least 30 per cent are spending in excess of $300 per person. Limited luxury is returning, with the ability to offer merchandise that people will find personally motivating, tempered with sensitivity to extravagance. At the height of the recession in 2008-2009 housewares and clothing were top items, now electronics and open gift cards top the list.
