Ignite - a spark of inspiration

Despite the changing leaves of a Canadian fall, green is still the colour to aspire to. Check out the latest in sustainable event planning.

Ask For It!:
In support of the new APEX/ASTM Standards, the Green Meeting Industry Council (GMIC) has just launched the Ask for It! campaign encouraging planners to ask suppliers for their sustainable practices. The standards cover the nine sectors of a meeting or event, and provide guidelines as a framework for sustainable events. The intent of the campaign is to raise awareness of the standards among suppliers and make sustainability a core component of event planning.
Green Module:
An eight-module interactive course on sustainable event planning is currently underway, and October 18th is the last day to register online to achieve a Certificate in Sustainable Events. The course is 40 hours of online instruction and fieldwork, that will culminate in creating and implementing the sustainability goals for the 2014 GMIC Sustainable Meeting Conference next April in San Francisco. Johanna Walsh, CMP, who has planned over 10 APEX compliant meetings since the standards were released, will guide the course.
Sustainable Standards:
After three years and an army of volunteers, the APEX/ASTM Standards set the stage for industry guidelines and compliance. The GMIC website has devoted a full section of their website as a top resource for suppliers about the APEX/ASTM standard, and also provides links to download the full standard at a reduced price.
Technology Help:
Tech guru Corbin Ball gets into the numbers game with 45 ways to use technology to support green meetings. Check out this online article with technological tips and applications to use before, during and after your event to help reduce paper consumption, streamline reporting, increase promotion and measure ROI. Ball outlines a wealth of sites and databases to simplify green planning, all at your fingertips.

CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
APEC Business Card
The Canadian government plans to launch a pilot project to facilitate Canadian business travel to Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation economies, with the APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC). The card will grant three-year multiple entry visas to business people who travel frequently to the Asia-Pacific region. Canada is a transitional member of the ABTC scheme, and is working towards issuing cards to Canadian citizens. The ABTC removes the need to individually apply for visas or entry permits, saving valuable time. Cardholders benefit from faster immigration processing on arrival via fast-track entry and exit through special lanes at major airports in participating economies.

CORPORATE GIFTS + REWARDS
Recognizing Rewards
Non-cash rewards in the form of incentive travel and merchandise/cards are used by 74 per cent of U.S. businesses, according to a just-released study by the Incentive Federation Inc. Rewards to motivate desired outcomes for sales staff and company employees were the most prevalent, with rewards to channel partners and clients for business appreciation were lower on the list. The total market for incentive travel spend for sales, employee and customer programs was USD$22 billion. Of the 74 per cent who are using non-cash rewards to motivate or appreciate their stakeholders 98 per cent use merchandise awards and 46 per cent are using incentive travel.
