Ignite a Sp@rk of inspiration. September 8, 2011 Issue

Ignite - a spark of inspiration

From caves to campsites, these guestrooms offer one-of-a-kind accommodations.

Pipe down for the night. A cross-section of recycled concrete water pipe is just the right width to house a queen size bed, as devised by the architects of the 20-pipe TuboHotel located in the getaway village of Tepoztlan, about 45 minutes south of Mexico City.
Dig in, down under. Rooms in the Desert Cave Hotel in Outback South Australia are in underground dugouts among the opal mines of Coober Pedy. There are, indeed, few distractions for conference delegates who can meet in the hotel’s 180-seat auditorium.
Sleep with the fishes. The Vancouver Aquarium organizes regular sleepovers, including an adult-only “hugs and fishes” Valentine’s Day night for adventurous couples. They enjoy a sushi-making lesson, cocktails and a movie, then it’s time to bed down under the watchful eyes of beluga whales in the Canada's Arctic underwater gallery.
Tight squeeze. With its largest rooms at less than 200 square feet, the Yotel capsule hotel in New York is the fourth venture of a pint-sized chain with airport outposts in London and Amsterdam. Each “cabin'’ has all the usual amenities, including a desk and a bath equipped with a monsoon power shower. Some even feature an outdoor terrace and hot tub.
Jailbird swan song. In Boston’s Beacon Hill neighbourhood near the Charles River, The Liberty Hotel is a former prison turned luxury retreat. Prison catwalks that criss-cross the lobby can be set for special events, allowing guests to peer out into the action in the open rotunda.
Bush league venue. Hear the roar of distant lions in the Savanna night as you sit around a campfire in suburban Toronto. As a family-friendly incentive, or what could be a coveted giveaway prize, a night in the Toronto Zoo's Serengeti Bush Camp is a chance to sleep under the stars in authentic African tents.

Corporate Gifts + Rewards
It’s back! Travel perks get good press (for a change)
When it comes to reporting on so-called travel perks in the workplace, media riptides may be easing. A recent report in USA Today declared that employee travel rewards are making a comeback, citing a rise in corporate bookings in resorts such as Atlantis in the Bahamas. The article, published here online, suggests that the AIG effect may finally be fading (referring to insurance industry execs meeting at a lavish resort in 2008 while their company had its hand out for government bailout money), as the value of travel rewards gets its due recognition.
