Langdon Hall, Cambridge, ON

A grand country house hotel and spa in Ontario’s bucolic countryside

By Sandra Eagle

An aura of understated elegance pervades the grounds and buildings of Langdon Hall, a country house hotel in Cambridge, Ont. This prestigious Relais & Chateau property hosted the Ignite team for our annual retreat.

The first whispered hint of the Inn’s historical charm comes at the end of the property’s winding road, as the columned portico comes into view. Inside, 52 guest rooms and suites are spacious and elegantly appointed, many with fine antiques. Most have large sitting areas with wood-burning fireplaces and windows that open out to the gardens or the surrounding Carolinian forest.

Couple the 19th Century setting with fine dining, and the experience evolves exponentially; the wonderfully inventive menu uses the bounty of the surrounding local farmland. Especially intriguing is the semolina bread with leek ash and smoked trout mousse and the tasting menu featuring pigeon and baked bone marrow. For breakfast, house-made bread, butter and pastries are piled high on the country table buffet, featuring smoked fish, fresh fruits and breakfast meats, while hearty egg dishes can be ordered off the menu.

The main house is the central heart of the property featuring the glassed-in main dining room, Wilks’ Bar and private dining areas for groups. One of the highlights of our retreat was dinner in the Red Room, the former ladies’ parlour, featuring a domed ceiling that carries conversations from one end of the table to the other. Colonel Langdon’s room doubled as our meeting space during the day, which can accommodate up to 16 people with an extendable antique table.

All of this, plus walking tours around the property and a full-service spa, means everything you need for hosting groups up to 50 is conveniently located right onsite.
