FICP to Update Name to Elevate the Meeting Planning Profession

CHICAGO – FICP members recently voted to change the name of the organization from Financial & Insurance Conference Planners to Financial & Insurance Conference Professionals. With this change, FICP will align the name of the association with its new vision, to amplify the positive impact and value of financial services and insurance industry meetings and events professionals.

“FICP’s Board of Directors recommended this change based on feedback and input received from surveys and focus groups with FICP members, specifically regarding the need to elevate the perception of meeting planning as a respected and trusted profession,” said 2017 FICP Chair Joseph Scully, Senior Director of Meeting & Event Management for John Hancock Financial Services. “This input – and the resulting vote – allows us to continue to evolve an organization that has served meetings and event professionals for 60 years to better meet that need.”

An overwhelming majority of active FICP members who cast ballots in a special electronic vote approved the board’s recommendation to change the name of the association, change the articles of incorporation to reflect the new name, and to change the bylaws to reflect the new name: Financial & Insurance Conference Professionals. The organization is in the process of making these administrative changes.

“Our members resoundingly agreed in the importance of this subtle yet powerful change, which is intended to emphasize the professional nature of our members’ contributions to their companies throughout their careers,” said FICP Executive Director Steve Bova. “This change will help FICP better serve not just its members, but all meetings and events professionals at financial services & insurance companies, while also aligning more closely to other organizations within our industry.”

FICP is a community of financial services and insurance industry meetings and events professionals dedicated to developing members, and advocating the positive impact and value of their work. We elevate the profession by leveraging partnerships and our members’ collective skills and experiences to create purposeful interactions for all stakeholders whose professional success is linked to our members’ work. FICP is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2017. Learn more at www.ficpnet.com.

Feeding the 5000: How this Calgary chef pulled off a luncheon for 5000 with a $380 budget.

Local Chef Andrew Hewson teamed up with LeftOvers Calgary, the Calgary Regional Partnership and the Recycling Council of Alberta to host an event called Feeding the 5000, bringing awareness to food waste. To pull off such an event is no small feat. There is no lack of food waste, so sourcing the ingredients for the meal was the easy part. Chef Hewson, an instructor at SAIT, used his local culinary connections to rescue food deemed unusable by growers, grocers and restaurants.

The International Centre CEO Inducted into Business Events Industry Hall of Fame

Industry Veteran Michael Prescott awarded for 40-year contribution to industry

Mississauga, ONThe International Centre, a leading trade and consumer show and conference venue in North America, announced today that CEO Michael Prescott has been inducted into Meetings + Incentive Travel’s Hall of Fame as an Industry Veteran. The award recognizes Prescott’s legacy for business and customer excellence in the Canadian Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) industry over the past four decades.

“Michael is a visionary leader who has helped shape this industry for nearly four decades” says Trevor Lui, Director of Operations and Sustainability at The International Centre. “From leading a multi-million dollar renewal of the facility, to enhancing the industry’s sustainable footprint, Michael has been a driving force behind change, development and growth and has established The International Centre as an award-winning destination.”

Prescott was selected for his meaningful professional achievements over the last four decades. His innovation and thought leadership has had a significant positive impact. Here are a few of his milestones:

  • The rejuvenation of one of the country’s original and largest independently-owned event facilities leading to employment, community growth and economic impact
  • An unwavering commitment to sustainable business, establishing The International Centre as a leader in the industry
  • A vision and passion for providing leading-edge design, for event food and event technology including a state-of-the-art 8,000 sq. ft. kitchen

Under Michael’s tenure, The International Centre’s economic impact has been significant. From hotels, restaurants, entertainment, travel to related event services, the facility has provided substantial growth for businesses and the City of Mississauga.

In addition to these accomplishments, Prescott has been lauded for his consistently high level of client loyalty and retention through the years and his long-standing and meaningful relationships with customers and employees.

“I am humbled to receive the Industry Veteran Award,” says Prescott. “This is a testament to the hard work, dedication and innovative thinking at The International Centre, including its partners, clients, and staff. I am excited to see what the future holds for the business events industry.”

Atlific Hotels Proudly Announces the Newly Renovated Holiday Inn & Suites Vancouver Downtown

The acclaimed Hager Design International Inc. has provided a stylish upgrade to the hotel’s elegant public spaces

Toronto, ON—Atlific Hotels is delighted to announce the recently completed renovations of Holiday Inn & Suites Vancouver Downtown. Designed by Vancouver-based interior design firm Hager Design International Inc., the hotel’s public spaces have been transformed to complement the property’s sleek and modern atmosphere. In addition to its newly minted space, the hotel is the perfect option for Vancouver visitors seeking accommodations in the heart of downtown.

“Our goal for the renovation was to achieve a fresh and contemporary design that reflects the energy of downtown Vancouver and Hager Design International Inc. brought our vision to life with creativity and ease,” said Tim Tindle, Vice- President Operations, Atlific Hotels “We are thrilled with the hotel’s new look and can’t wait for guests to experience the sophisticated and modern renovations while enjoying the friendly service that the Holiday Inn & Suites Vancouver Downtown is known for,” he continued.

The renovations include carefully selected floor, wall and ceiling finishes paired with decorative and architectural lighting elements that have brightened the lobby, bar lounge, meeting rooms and pre-function areas. In the transformed lobby, visitors are now welcomed by alluring pops of colour, accompanied by beautiful millwork screens and stone clad columns. A memorable experience is created as guests enter the grand staircase which glistens under the sparkling light of newly installed, bespoke chandeliers. This one-of-a-kind complex chandelier was the driving force of the overall design philosophy, created to grab the attention of passersby and draw them into the space. Custom, hand tufted carpeting brings warmth and interest to all renovated areas, completing the newly refined and inviting experience.

With an understanding of the hotel’s versatile functionality, Hager Design International Inc. used high performance materials to serve the hotel’s numerous functions. The new lighting and drapery applied in the lobby areas are carried out to the pre-function and the meeting rooms, framing a more functional space and rounding out the hotel’s new look. These elements blend effortlessly, elevating the space into a vibrant and comfortable oasis perfectly suited for business meetings, social events and weddings.

Located at the corner of Howe and Helmcken Streets, the hotel sits in the heart of Vancouver’s bustling urban centre and is a short walk from a variety of shops, businesses, the city’s hottest restaurants and entertainment venues. Visitors can stroll along Yaletown’s Waterfront Seawall or take a ferry across False Creek to Granville Island. The hotel is just a 7-minute drive from Stanley Park and a 19- minute drive from Vancouver International Airport.

Destination Direct Canada Announces Departure of Two Principals

The partners behind the highly successful venture Destination Direct Canada wish to announce the departure of two of the four principals.

The departure of Jennifer (Holly) Beatty of Hollyworks and Doreen Ashton Wagner of Ashton Wagner Enterprises Inc. is taking place for completely unrelated reasons and the split is under amicable terms. Both women say their decision came down to a realignment of priorities in the face of competing time demands. Patricia Pearson of CanPlan Event and Conference Services and Chantel Beaupré of Say Something Communications will remain to manage the event for 2018.

Jennifer will be focusing on her growing business development efforts for resiada, a new Event Reservation Management solution that simplifies the housing management process and generates extra revenue for event organizers. Of course she continues to devote time to Meeting of the Minds, a collaborative group designed for Destination Marketing Organizations to engage in high-level discussions about the Canadian meetings industry. Jen wants to pursue other personal interests,  all while having a little more time to smell the roses!

Doreen will be continuing her work as Organizational Catalyst and professional event facilitator for Greenfield Services, and co-producer of The Engaging Associations Forum. Doreen also will be devoting more time to her passion project: ForLoveAndBusiness.com is a community for women entrepreneurs who are in business with a spouse or "significant other." Having been in business with her husband for almost 20 years, she knows about precarious the balance between love and business and she is dedicated to helping others learn through downloadable resources, online and live events.

Both Jennifer and Doreen wish Patricia and Chantel the very best for a successful Destination Direct in 2018.
