Ignite a Sp@rk of inspiration. January 2010 Issue

JANUARY 2010
Ignite - a spark of inspiration

Whether your job is to run a formal recognition program for staff or you need informal ideas to help keep a small team stoked, we’ve gathered a few suggestions to retain and motivate the troops.

Create a training calendar. Even if you don't have a huge professional development budget, make sure it all gets used to attend industry conferences or take online courses. Scheduling 2011 learning opportunities now provides a personal reward that will be anticipated through the year.
Commend performance. In the mad rush of deadlines, it’s easy to forget to acknowledge a job well done - especially if someone is so good, he or she makes it look easy. Whether the message comes from you or another team member, take responsibility to make a well-deserved "thank you" part of your management process.
Go to bat for non-sales staff. If sales are up and the economic tides are turning, consider whether it might be fair to extend performance bonuses to acknowledge the additional contribution of non-sales and operations staff.
Lead like a recruiter. Don’t save your best PR just for attracting new hires – talk up your company’s benefits to remind your top performers why they’re part of a winning team. It’ll help lessen any lure from the competition.
Bring in resources. People may be still doing more with less, but you might find ways to alleviate the workload without having to hire another body. Identify any non-core, burdensome tasks that overloaded staff may be relieved to outsource to a consultant on an hourly or part-time basis.
Do something together. Plan to mix it up between teams and departments with some kind of group activity at least once this year. Find our teambuilding ideas that include everything from race-car driving to cooking classes.
Let people have a life. People who "live to work" are not in balance. In a high-demand job that can run 24/7, family and personal time can suffer – it can be a matter of time before work performance falls behind. Think about offering options to telecommute or being flexible in a way that says: "have a life."
