Ignite - a spark of inspiration
Getting a group from place to place need not be a boring commute. Here are five ideas to move your meetings.
Assemble a specialty fleet. Nothing shouts “VIP” more than, say, a ride in a 1958 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I (Niagara Classic Cabs has one), a fleet of vintage cars or Film-fest-worthy limos. The bigger your group, the more likely you’ll need more than one supplier, so use a destination management company to source the cars you need and save time. “From a risk management perspective, we also handle due diligence on insurance, whether a company is subcontracting, and driver credentials,” advises Ann Corbitt, vice-president of Toronto’s Premier Conference and Events Inc.
Make the journey a destination. In a tightly programmed conference, help delegates make the most of every minute by organizing transfers that double as quick tours of your host city. For example, in Halifax, you can shuttle participants between hotels and meeting venues on one of  Ambassatours Gray Line 19 authentic vintage London double deckers (the largest such fleet in the world).
Count your carbon. Look for vehicles that demonstrate your corporate responsibility to the environment. More transport companies like Global Alliance are adding hybrid cars to their fleets, and are part of Green Ride Global, a carbon accounting organization that tracks and reports greenhouse gas emissions. Download this PDF of Green Ride’s latest Green Preferred Supplier List of Chauffeured Ground Transportation – a must-have for any green-conscious meeting or travel planner.
Stagger your timing. Think of a shotgun start to a multi-venue event, so participants don’t always have to arrive and leave all at once. “Rather than arrange for a large fleet of one-ways to move a large group, you can hire fewer vehicles and run a shuttle service,” says Premier Conference and Events’ Ann Corbitt – saving you money in the process.
Just hoof it. One way to cut out the need for vehicle transfers altogether is to carefully select hotels and conference venues within walking distance. Delegates can cover short distances by foot, or you can still opt to offer a little “transportainment” with a unique ride: When RE/MAX hosted top real estate brokers in Toronto last year, it hired  Rickshaws of Toronto Media to provide free rides between event venues in well-branded rickshaws.

CORPORATE TRAVEL MANAGEMENT
U.S. air carriers to slash capacity
Farewell to summer seat sales and fare discounts on business travel south of the border: Air carriers in the U.S. are poising to slash capacity, reducing available seats at the six largest airlines by  6.8% by year’s end, compared to 2008 levels. The projection was compiled with data by OAG Aviation Solutions released by Bloomberg News. Its analysis suggests that this round of capacity cuts will be even larger than the U.S. airlines’ 3.9% pullback in 2002 following the September 11 attacks – equal to grounding the domestic traffic of US Airways Group Inc., the sixth-largest carrier by traffic.
INCENTIVES + MEETINGS
Promo donates incentives to thank workers
We applaud the spirit of a recent promotion run by Ottawa’s Brookstreet hotel to reward recession-weary workers right at home. The property recently donated several luxury “Staycation” packages to the local business community, as part of a kit to run an employee incentive program. "What a great way for us to promote team spirit and reward employees for 'performance over and above',” stated one happy corporate planner, Carol Sollows, CGA Manager, Administration and Accounting of Advanced Business Interiors, one of the companies that received a kit. “This promotion falls directly in line with our Employee Rewards Program,” she said. It engaged teams in contests to win a luxury break in the city, to enjoy with their families.
CORPORATE GIFTS + REWARDS
Take 5 to share your Top 10 incentive gifts
Which rewards are most effective? Tell us now in an online survey, for a chance to win a $500 gift card from a major Canadian retailer. A leading market research group wants to hear from meeting and incentive professionals like you, and Ignite magazine will share results with readers in a future issue. “We are conducting research to discover what industry professionals consider to be the most effective incentives and corporate gifts to help them achieve their objectives,” says Blanka Dido, account manager with Strategic Direct Marketing Group. It’s five minutes well-spent to help measure what motivates people the most. Take the survey.

Yes, we would like fries with this job. As an entry rung into one of the world’s top food service organizations, this job posting for a National Marketing Coordinator at the Toronto HQ of Macdonald’s Restaurants of Canada sounds, to us, like a golden career opportunity for a versatile planner and administrator.
